The Yankees announced late yesterday that they were willing to waive their usual rule of not negotiating with players mid-season in order to sign A Rod to a contract extension. A Rod’s agent basically said in an interview today, “Thanks but no thanks.” We’ll wait until the end of the season to start talking to anyone. So it looks like this year will be A Rod’s last as a Yankee.

But is that really such a bad thing? I have kinda been an A Rod supporter through most of the bashing. I’ll admit, when he was deep in his choking at the plate faze I was as annoyed with him as any other Yankee fan. I just think a lot of the criticism he gets is undeserved. He is one of the greatest, if not the greatest players of our time.

But the Yankee lineup is filled with great players, and look how they are doing. Terrible. What they need is team chemistry. A collection of team players that all play their hardest every night and get along with each other. The Yanks need to go back to the teams of 5-10 years ago. They need players like Bernie Williams, Tino Martinez and Paul O’neil. Not an all star linup up that is self centered and inconsistent.

So lets hope the Yanks start to shake up the current lineup with good homegrown talent and solid players through the trade block.

I just want give my thoughts about the annual July 4th Nathans hotdog eating contest in Coney Island on ESPN. It is…freaking great! If I remember the stat correctly from a few days ago, more people watched this event on TV than the final game of the NBA finals. Amazing.

All the over the top characters are great: Kobiashi (sp?), Joe Chestnut, the guy with the chicken wing eating record…they are all good. And insane. That guy Chestnut ate nothing for two days before the event, but guzzled water by the gallon to expand his stomach. Nuts.

The announcer was fantastic too…”When you Google ‘American Hero’ tomorrow the results will be Abraham Lincoln, John Glen….and Joey Chestnut, for bringing the Nathans crown back to the USA.” LOL!

And to the people who say it’s disgusting and should be banned for the bad message it sends to children…go pound it. Yes it is disgusting but that’s what makes it hilarious, and I haven’t heard about any kid going and trying to eat 60 hotdogs after watching this over the top, messy, nasty “sport”. It’s just good “clean” fun.

Today’s sports takes:

Roger Clemens won his 350th game last night. Big congrats to him!! He joins a very elite group, I believe only eight other players have ever hit that milestone and the last one was in the 1960s.

But even though last night’s win was great, the Yankees have been absolutely horrible lately. The division is definitely out of reach and the wildcard would be a miracle. Very very disappointing.

One last Yankee note: Mrs. Arod’s F U shirt was classless but who really gives a crap what a players wife wears to the ballpark? And it gets a whole page in the Post?! I am so sick of hearing about hearing about Arod’s extracurricular activities I could puke.

Lastly, even though I am not a Barry Bond’s fan, I kind of like the fact that not only was he voted into the All Star Team starting line up, but he was 3rd in overall vote totals. All we hear from the media is that the fans hate Bonds. But maybe it’s just the media that has the big problem with him.

Have a great 4th of July!
